The City of Madrid

Madrid is the capital and most populous city of Spain. The city has almost 3.4 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.7 million. It is the second-largest city in the European Union (EU), and its monocentric metropolitan area is the second-largest in the EU.

The beautiful city of Madrid serves as one of the UNCHAIN Living Labs. Madrid is an important logistics hub, located within the Atlantic and the Mediterranean TEN-T corridors. Since the pandemic outbreak, the city has experienced a substantial and exponential rise in e-commerce and home delivery, a major part of which is expected to remain in the “new normal”.

Despite the successful implementation of a Low Emission Zone scheme, air pollution remains one of the most challenging environmental risks to the health of Madrid inhabitants.
